AfterTurkish militaryjetsbombedtheQandilMountainsinIraqiKurdistanonthenightofAugust17andthedaysfollowedintermittentlycontinued,thelong-standingKurdishquestioninTurkeyoncemoreraises.Turkish militarybombardhasstartedafterPKK’sattacksthatkilledabout40Turkishsoldiers.However,thehorizonofKurdishquestionismurkyformanyKurds. WhenRecepTayyipErdogancametopowerin2002,hepromisedtosolvetheKurdishquestion;whilepreviousgovernmentswereunableto even mentionthereissuchaproblem.ThisvalorgavemillionsofKurdsimpulseofhope;therebyKurdsmostlyvotedforErdogan’sAKP.However,Erdogan’spromiseapparentlyhasbecomefaint. TheAKPstartedaso-called“democratizationprocess,”whichmainlywasanopeningprocesstowardKurdsthroughraisingdemocraticstandards.DuringtheAKPera,somestepshavebeentaken;Nevertheless,manymorestepsshouldfollowforaradicalsolutionofthedecades-longKurdishissue.However,whensomebigotednationaliststriedtoprovoketheprocess,Erdoganpushedtohalttheprocess. Ironically,duringthelastelectioncampaignErdogandeniedKurdishquestion;hesaid,“thereisno such aproblem."ThishesitationgraduallycrumbledthetiesinbetweenAKPandmanyKurds. ThenewroundofviolencebetweenTurkishstateandPKKwon’tchangeanythingexceptmorecasualties.

AsidefromPKK’sunclearapproaches,conservativeAKPshouldbeawarethatlong-ignoredKurdsin the southeasternTurkeywon’tchoosesilenceanymoreifTurkishstatedoesn’tapproachstepstogivethemtheiruniversalrights.ArabspringshouldbeagreatlessontoAKPaswellalongwithautocraticrulersintheregion.DemocraticTurkeyshouldalsocoverKurds’needs.IhavebeeninDyarbikir,thebiggestpredominatelyKurdishcity;thecityhasbeenignoredcomparedtootherTurkishcities,becauseoftheethnicalpopulationofthecity.Onecaneasilyseefrailtyintheinfrastructure,andunemploymentisubiquitousintheregion.Theycan’tspeaktheirlanguage,andKurdishisforbiddenintheofficialplaces,includingschools.ProKurdishBDP,gained36seatsinthe newparliament,morethan2500oftheirmembersareinprisonbecauseoftherepoliticalactivities.IfAKPdoesn’tsolveKurdishquestioninsidethe newpromisedconstitution;theyshouldexpecthugeprotestsinthesoutheasternregion,whichismostlyinhabitedbyKurds.Kurdswon’taccepttoliveinautumnanymorewhiletheyarewatchingArabspring.
